Police are investigating a case of attempted murder against an Odendaalsrus farmer after a farm worker was admitted to hospital in Welkom with serious injuries on Monday.
Police Captain Stephen Thakeng said on Tuesday the victim, Andries Xaba, 57, sustained multiple body and head injuries in "an incident" and was treated in the intensive care unit at Bongani Hospital.
Xaba had initially alleged that he was tied up with a rope and dragged behind the farmer's bakkie for not slaughtering two sheep.
"Mr Xaba has since changed his statement regarding the dragging behind the bakkie. It was false," Thakeng said."
The farmer's wife took Xaba to hospital for medical treatment after the incident, Thakeng said.
The farmer, accompanied by his lawyer, handed himself over to police at the Odendaalsrus police station on Tuesday.
He was expected to appear in the local magistrate court on Tuesday afternoon.
