March Against Reckless Driving

E-mail Print PDF

Enough is enoughMembers of a group called "Genoeg is Genoeg" marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday to protest against reckless driving by taxi drivers.

Spokesman for the group Lian Fourie said they were calling for stricter regulation of taxis.

"Taxi operators make their own rules and no one stands up to them," he said.

Dressed in white T-shirts with black armbands, the group of about 150 marched through the streets of Pretoria chanting: "Genoeg is genoeg" [Enough is enough] and "This is for Bernadine".

They also waved placards reading: "Taxi driver, no brain, no pain".

Fourie said the group was formed last week in memory of 16-year-old Bernadine Kruger who was killed, allegedly by a taxi, while she was riding a scooter to Garsfontein Hoerskool.

The taxi driver, Percyval Matji of Mamelodi has been granted bail of R1000 and is scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on April 6.

The Genoeg is Genoeg group has about 7000 members on Facebook.

Chief executive officer of AfriForum, Kallie Kriel said they have commissioned a study on taxi-related reckless driving incidents.

He said the outcome of the study, together with petitions, would be presented to the Transport Minister Jeff Radebe next month, highlighting their concerns about taxi drivers.

"We call for the authorities to implement road rules and apply harsh sentences," he said.

Bernadine's father Kobus Kruger said he hoped something would be done to uproot reckless driving.

In a memorandum addressed to President Kgalema Motlanthe, the group said minibus drivers ignored the existing road regulations, and called for laws to be applied more stringently and with more severe penalties.
