Police have killed three of a gang of gunmen who held several shoppers hostage on Thursday at a Checkers supermarket in Montclair, Durban paramedics said.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the gunmen shot and killed the store manager who was in his 50s and threw his body out of the store, on a corner of Kenyon Howden Road.
According to police spokeswoman Priscilla Ellapen between three and five gunmen had entered the shop. Police dogs were being used to scour the building to ascertain whether more suspects were hiding inside, Ellapen told Sapa from the scene.
The ten people taken hostage at the store have since been released. They were receiving counselling.
An elderly shopper suffered a massive heart attack because of the stressful situation, and another staff member was hysterical from a nervous breakdown. Both were led out of the store by police.
