An armed intruder who confronted a Mamelodi East man inside his home was accidentally shot by his own gun, Johannesburg police said on Saturday.Captain Johannes Maheso told Sapa three suspected robbers had entered the man's home late on Friday night with one weapon - a 9mm pistol.
"The one suspect was trying to operate the pistol when the victim realised there was a problem with the firearm.
"So they (the armed intruder and victim) fought over the gun when a shot accidentally went off," said Maheso.
The robber was struck. His two accomplices ran off.
Maheso said the injured suspect was taken to hospital and is under police guard.
He is reportedly in a serious but stable condition, said police.
The victim was uninjured.
Police are investigating the matter further.
