Eight people were injured during a confrontation with police when they protested against the killing of an alleged robber, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said two armed men entered a store in Pietermaritzburg and demanded cash from the shop owner on Thursday.
"There was a scuffle between the two robbers and the shop owner shot one of the robbers. Both the robbers ran out of the store but one collapsed outside the store.
"The man died at the scene. A crowd of angry protesters began to form outside the store and they were angry that the shop owner shot the man," she said.
Jeevan said the protesters were unaware that the man had robbed the store and they thought the shop owner shot him for no reason.
"Police arrived on the scene and about 500 protesters started stoning the police.
"The police retaliated and fired rubber bullets. Six men and two women sustained slight injuries," said Jeevan.
Police were investigating cases of public violence, assault against police and armed robbery and had opened an inquest into the man's death.
