Soweto FloodsMetro officers were unable to reach all the victims of flooding in Soweto on Thursday, Johannesburg Metro police said.

Inspector Edna Mamonyane said one patrol car had been caught in flood waters and other officers could not reach people due to traffic standing still on roads as a result of flood waters.

"We are having serious problems," she said.

Earlier 40 people were injured after a bus, a minibus and four cars were trapped on a flooded bridge in Dube.

Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Percy Morokane said people inside the bus started panicking and tried to jump from the bus, resulting in serious and minor injuries.

All the injured were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.

Everyone was rescued from the six stricken vehicles, except for a 9-year-old boy who was reported missing.

The Mofolo, Dobsonville, Dube, Orlando and Meadowlands areas in Soweto were flooded following heavy rains on Thursday afternoon.

Reports of an 11-year-old girl who was swept away and died and reports of three people reported missing could not be confirmed.
