Polokwane - Limpopo police are looking for a man whose tongue was almost bitten off while he was trying to rape an elderly woman in Vleifontein outside Makhado.

Constable Jeaneth Mamukhwana of the Makhado police's child protection, sexual and family violence unit said the man fled after the 67-year-old woman bit off a part of his tongue.

"An unknown man broke into the granny's house in the middle of the night last Friday and tried to rape her. She bit off his tongue as she was trying to defend herself. He left a piece of his tongue lying on the ground and ran for his life," she said.

Mamukhwana added that a case of attempted rape had been opened and appealed to the community to be on the look-out for a man whose tongue had been partly severed.

"Anyone who sees such a man must please alert the police," she said.

Mamukhwana said the piece of tongue had been sent to a forensic laboratory in Pretoria for DNA tests.
