Johannesburg - Dozens of villagers in Tzaneen pelted Eskom workers with stones when they tried to remove illegal electricity connections, Limpopo police said on Thursday.
Residents of a village called Ritavi attacked the Eskom workers on Wednesday, Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said.
"They also pelted Eskom security guards that were keeping a watch on the workers. Police were called in and order was restored," she said.
No arrests were made and no injuries were reported, but an Eskom vehicle was damaged.
Otto said police were monitoring the situation.
Eskom apparently decided to remove the illegal connections and provide legal connections, for which the residents would have to pay.
Otto said Eskom had not opened a criminal case, but a meeting was planned for Thursday.
Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe was not immediately available for comment.
