Fraudsters are scamming Johannesburg residents, City Power warned on Tuesday. They were posing as officials from the municipality and its power company, City Power senior corporate investigator Jabu Mkhonza said in a statement.
They phone customers with details of their accounts and outstanding balances and threaten to cut their electricity unless they make a payment to a specific account, using a special pin number.
Mkhonza asked anyone who believed they had been victims of the scam to contact City Power. He advised customers to pay their accounts only at official credit control sites.
