Honorary Professor of Education at the University of the Witwatersrand, Professor Jonathan Jansen, was on Friday appointed new rector of the University of the Free State.
The Chairman of the University of the Free State (UFS) Council, Judge Faan Hancke, made the announcement and said the decision was taken by an overwhelming majority.
"This signals the commitment of the UFS to continue as a world-class university that at the same time pursues the objectives of transformation in the interest of the entire university community."
Hancke said the UFS was privileged to have had candidates of the highest calibre applying for the position.
He said the appointment of Jansen, currently the government-appointed administrator of the Durban University of Technology, was transparent and participatory.
"This has been a truly vibrant, transparent and participatory selection process, which has resulted in our institution being able to make his historic appointment."
Hancke appealed to the entire UFS community, including staff, students and alumni, to support Jansen as new rector and vice-chancellor.
He said the appointment of the first black rector in the university's 105 year history marked an important moment in the life of the institution.
"We should celebrate this achievement as a united university community," said Hancke.
Judge Hancke said Jansen accepted the appointment and indicated that he would do his utmost best to be of service to the UFS.
The UFS Council indicated that it wanted Jansen to start in his new job as soon as possible.
