A 14-year-old Pietermaritzburg boy got his cellphone back after he followed the robbers who stole it from him, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
"Ruann Meyer was walking to school and was on the corner of Burger and Boshoff Street in the Pietermaritzburg CBD, when the incident occurred," said Inspector Joey Jeevan.
She said three men approached Meyer and one threatened him with a knife on Thursday.
The man demanded he hand over his cellphone, which he did.
The men ran away with Meyer's Samsung E250 cellphone.
"After they fled, Meyer followed the suspect who was in possession of his cellphone towards Braid Street where with the assistance of members of the community, he managed to apprehend the suspect."
The other two men managed to escape.
"The police were summoned and the suspect was subsequently arrested," Jeevan said.
Meyer's cellphone and the knife believed to have been used in the incident were found in the man's possession.
The 21-year-old would appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon.
