Former president FW de Klerk congratulated President Jacob Zuma on his inauguration as the country's fourth president on Saturday."He wishes him strength and success in carrying out his duties as president in upholding our Constitution and in promoting the well-being of all our people," said the FW de Klerk Foundation in a statement.
"He hopes that President Zuma will be able to build on the progress of the past fifteen years and that he will successfully address the many serious problems that continue to challenge our young democracy."
De Klerk did not attend the inauguration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria due to "long-standing international commitments", according to the statement.
De Klerk, who was president from 1989 to 1994, played a key role in apartheid South Africa's smooth transition to democracy.
