An inmate who voted at Leeuwkop prison, north of Johannesburg on Wednesday, said crime was a major issue."There's no jobs, and you are hungry and must do crime," said Vusi Thabethe.
He had been in prison for two years and would be released in the coming weeks.
"I am voting for the white party [DA], I don't vote for [ANC president Jacob] Zuma.
"Because when that one [the apartheid government] ruled the country there was not suffering and there were jobs."
Iain Cameron, a commercial pilot, who lives near the prison said: "Crime is never won.
"More police, better trained police and better paid police."
