E-mail Print PDF
Bullet HoleA security guard was arrested after two people were held up by an armed gang in Waverley while driving back from a local airport on Sunday morning, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Bhekizizwe Mavundla would not immediately reveal which airport, but said the two men were followed from there.

"When they reached Burn Street in Waverley near Norwood, they were stopped by five armed suspects. The five men fired shots at their BMW, demanding that they open windows and doors."

A security company patrolling the area heard gunshots and rushed to the scene. During the ensuing gunfight the gang fled in their silver Mercedez Benz.

"One of them, believed to be employed by another security company, was however arrested and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court within the next 48 hours," said Mavundla.

No one was injured during the shooting.

Cases of attempted murder and attempted armed robbery were being investigated.
